OFFICE THREAD 01▲ 2.1ku/throwaway_8months14h

My manager presents my work as his own in every standup

I've been on this team eight months. Every time I fix something, he brings it to standup like it was his. Last week I stayed until nine getting a release out and the next morning he said "I went ahead and cleaned that up." I was on the call. I said nothing.

It's not one incident. He takes all the credit every single time, and when something breaks he throws me under the bus before anyone has even asked what happened.

I don't want to be the person who runs to HR over a standup. But I'm starting to feel like I'm under a microscope while he gets a free pass. Am I overreacting?

▲ 340   u/ex_consultant_now

You're not overreacting. Start documenting. Not to build a case — just so you stop doubting yourself. Six weeks of notes and you'll see the pattern clearly.

▲ 128   u/quietquitter22

Classic. He's building a promotion case off your work. The fix isn't confronting him, it's making your work visible before he can repackage it. Post in the team channel when you finish something. Timestamped, factual, no attitude.

▲ 87   u/mgr_of_managers

Manager here. If you tell me "he takes credit," I hear a complaint. If you tell me "I shipped X on the 4th, here's the thread," I can act on it. Describe the situation, not the person.

▲ 54   u/been_there_2019

I started looping in his boss on the work itself — not to tattle, just as a normal update. Petty? Maybe. It worked in about a month.

How do you say no without sounding like you can’t handle it?

Every time someone asks me to pick something up I say yes, and now I'm carrying three people's work. I know the answer is "just say no" but I freeze because it sounds like I'm admitting I can't cope.

What do people actually say? I need something that isn't "I'm too busy," because that lands like I'm complaining about my workload.

▲ 512   u/pm_since_2014

"I'm at capacity right now — if this is a priority, what should come off my plate?" You're not refusing. You're asking them to choose. Nine times out of ten they suddenly remember it can wait.

▲ 276   u/tired_designer

I don't have the bandwidth is the phrase you're looking for. It moves it from can't to don't-have-room. Nobody reads it as weakness.

▲ 141   u/eng_lead_x

Also fine: "That's outside my scope — I'd rather it go to someone who owns it." Framing it as a routing problem, not a willingness problem.

▲ 63   u/remote_since_20

If you genuinely can do it later: "Can we push it to next week?" Give a date. A no with a date is barely a no.

OFFICE THREAD 03▲ 980u/nonnative_pm3d

I zone out in meetings because I can’t follow the jargon

English is my second language. In writing I'm fine. In meetings people talk fast, use shorthand, and by the time I've parsed a sentence they've moved on two topics.

The worst part is I've stopped asking. Saying "I don't understand" three times in one meeting feels like announcing you shouldn't be there.

▲ 421   u/director_ops

Stop saying "I don't understand." It puts the failure on you. Say "I'm not sure I follow" — same meaning, but it reads as a request for clarity, not a confession.

▲ 203   u/staff_eng

When you need to disagree, don't lead with disagreement. "Let me push back on that" gives people half a second to prepare. Straight "I disagree" ends conversations.

▲ 158   u/the_facilitator

Two that will save you every week: "Can we park that for now?" when someone derails, and "Let's take this offline" when two people start a side debate. Nobody thinks you're lost — they think you're running the room.

▲ 77   u/also_esl

And when you're put on the spot with no answer: "I'll circle back on that." It buys you a day and nobody reads it as not knowing.

"I don't understand"는 내가 못 알아들었다는 자백이고, "I'm not sure I follow"는 설명을 더 해달라는 요청입니다.

I’m not sure I follow.
Let me push back on that.
Can we park that for now?
Let’s take this offline.
I’ll circle back on that.
Just to play devil’s advocate…

OFFICE THREAD 04▲ 3.3ku/first_real_mistake6h

I missed something big and it went to the client. What do I say?

A file went out with last quarter's numbers in it. Client noticed before we did. My lead is asking what happened and I've rewritten the message four times.

Every version either sounds like I'm making excuses or like I'm falling apart. How do people actually own a mistake at work?

▲ 890   u/vp_eng_throwaway

Short. "That's on me. Here's what happened, here's the fix, here's what stops it next time." Three sentences. The longer you write, the more it reads as defence.

▲ 402   u/ops_lead_44

Never open with context. Open with ownership. "I dropped the ball on that" first, explanation second. Reverse the order and the explanation sounds like an excuse.

▲ 219   u/process_person

For the follow-up, don't blame a person — blame the gap. "It slipped through the cracks" is doing real work in that sentence: it says the process failed, without saying nobody's responsible.

▲ 96   u/been_here_10y

Then ask for a post-mortem. Sounds grim, it's just a normal meeting. It turns your mistake into the team's improvement, which is the fastest way out of this.

My director keeps asking for a number I don’t have yet

Every time I say "I don't have that yet" he pushes. I've started guessing, and twice now my guess became the number in a deck I never saw.

How do you give someone a figure without it hardening into a commitment?

▲ 288   u/fpna_person

Label it before you say it. "Ballpark figure — low twenties. I'll have the real one Thursday." The label is the whole trick. Say the number naked and it goes straight into a slide.

▲ 167   u/strategy_ex

"Directionally correct" is the other one. It says the shape is right and the decimals aren't. Consultants live on this phrase for a reason.

▲ 94   u/data_eng_z

Also push back on bad comparisons. "Let's make sure we're comparing apples to apples" — half the time the number he wants isn't the number he means.

▲ 41   u/cfo_adjacent

And if it really is too soon: "It's too early to tell." That's a complete answer. You don't owe him a guess.
